4 Things Photography / Creative Students Need To Understand While They Study
1. Working within creative fields is a journey – Wouldn’t it be great if creative students could graduate from their arts degrees and walk straight into a well paid job like a lot of other professions. Unfortunately however, that’s not usually how it works. If your wanting to be a creative you need to be ready to be in it for the hard slog.
2. Know your why! – Knowing why you want to do something is the cornerstone belief that is going to get you through the hard times in University and your future working life.
Write down the specific reasons you want to become an (X), goals you want to achieve doing (X), and the reasons why no other job will compete. This list at some point could help you to push through a creative rut, or feelings of uncertainty which all people experience at times.
“The fastest way for a tadpole to become a frog is to live everyday happily as a tadpole.”
3. Don’t look to far ahead or predict what you specifically want to do in the future – Everything today is moving at an incredibly fast pace. Keep your eyes wide open but focus on doing what you’re doing now, and enjoy the present. A favorite quote of mine regarding starting up something from scratch is.. “The fastest way for a tadpole to become a frog is to live every day happily as a tadpole.”
4. Don’t wait for something to fall into your lap! – Don’t believe that if you solely just continue to do your personal projects that clients will come to you. No matter what your portfolio looks like you are going to have to reach out to people and clients to be seen. There is simply too much competition out there for people to specifically ask for you. So stay focused your personal projects but keep looking for ways to reach out to people and brands.
